Cinnamonia is a project made up of ex-Madrigal singer Sandra Werner, and ex-Operating Strategies multi-instrumentalist Thomas Kohler. The Scarlet Sea is yet another one of those ethereal combinations of soft female vocals and electronic, ambient music. The disc consists of 11 tracks: 9 original pieces and 2 traditional Irish songs. Comparisons have been made with the works of David Sylvian, accompanied by female vocals.
There is nothing new in this band's sound or approach. Everybody from Kate Bush, to Enya, to Jane Siberry have dabbled in this kind of esoteric fluff. Sandra Werner has a pleasant voice but every song seems to be sung with exactly the same approach. All tracks seem to just blend into each other, to the point where there is no real dividing line between the end of one and the beggining of the next. The music is nothing more than ambient New Age, which never develops into anything . Sitting through 11 tracks of this can be a difficult task . Unless you happen to be the one person who voted for ambient music in our musical direction poll held a few months back, I'd suggest you put this disc back down in the rack and back away slowly. I don't even think your girlfriend will get into this one .Mine didn't. Ho-hum.
