I Wrestled A Bear Once: I Wrestled A Bear Once

There have been many quirky pairings in the world of music. Some of them work some of them don't. I would have to say that the combinations that this group brings to the table are by far, the most diverse I have heard in quite sometime. Not many would take a chance and mesh death metal growling with jazz interludes or even electronic dance music. Well, I Wrestled A Bear Once has done just that and this EP gives you a taste of what is to come from a full fledged CD slated to be released later this year from Century Media.

While it may be hard for some to swallow, this is a mixture that will keep you on your toes for sure. Front woman Krysta Cameron defies vocal categorization as she can take it from a very deep growl to a beautiful melodic tone at the drop of a hat. She really manages to keep it interesting through all the twists and turns that the band goes through on this 23 minute brief excursion. Like the opening song "ulrich firelord: breaker of mountains", where she vocally takes you through the worlds of death metal and jazz as if the two have co-existed often within the same tune.

Or you might try to keep up with her as she once again starts you off with some wicked grindcore growls and then takes you to a Broadway style work that sounds as if Andrew Lloyd Weber might have had a hand in it with the strange "alaskan flounder basket". Yes, not only is this one of the most unique bands to come along, they also hold the title as coming up with the most off the wall song names.

The disc has a strange appeal but it is definitely an acquired taste. It took me sometime to warm up to it, but when I did it was a great deal of fun to follow the short and winding road they take you down. I hope the full length disc is just as much of a good time.
