Trist is yet another solo project coming from a Black Metal artist. Tristan (Aran) was formerly involved with Luna Aurora (cool name), before starting his solitary journey under the moniker Trist. This German multi-instrumentalist has released three albums before Willenskraft (Willpower in English).
Aran makes use of nature samplings, mostly water but also some birds, in his songwriting. The waves of the ocean are omnipresent, carrying the listener from one song to the next, almost like a mean of transportation. The waves combined with somber keyboard arrangements to create a quite unique ambience, not frequently heard in Black Metal. Then comes the other aspects of Trist's work: the more straightforward mid-paced Black Metal. Both elements team up very well actually, creating some sort of grim and depressive scenery. The tempo in fact moves from moderate to fast, without venturing into the hyper blasting/ furious modes. The distorted guitars, sick rasps and double basses are forming a rather simple and repetitive song structure that manages to remain interesting still. The keyboards are where variety is coming from on this album. Going from ambient to spacey, then turning into something more epic one moment, only ending up by being on the industrial side. They are never out of place, and definitely helping in the atmospheric areas. My favorite compositions are : "Herzenswunsch" "Wagenut" and "Wandlung".
Willenskraft is one ambient Black Metal release well worth checking out.
