Such a longwinded title, but who cares? This killer set from the original Living Colour rocks harder than anything the band ever laid down in the studio. Plus, liner notes by New York musician and radio personality "Handsome Dick" Manitoba and some truly awesome photos of the legendary club tell the CBGB story with lines like this: "The walls inside were covered with graffiti and stickers so thick that, I swear, the rooms got noticeably smaller as the years went by."
Forget the hit-or-miss albums Living Colour released after 1988's landmark "Vivid (including 2003's reunion album CollideOscope), and prepare for a barrage of rock, metal and punk from a seminal and colorful band. Here's what you get in this primal soundboard recording of a CBGB benefit gig that spans Living Colour's entire career: Jaw-droppin' guitar groovin' courtesy of Vernon Reid, brain-rattlin' rhythms from bassist Doug Wimbash and drummer Will Calhoun, massive ear-slappin' via he's-still-got-it vocalist Corey Glover, and a fine, fine specimen of rock 'n' roll cross-pollination. Unless you've seen these dudes live, you've never heard Living Colour like this.
A portion of the sales of this and other CBGB OMFUG Masters releases will go to the Hilly Kristal Foundation for Musicians and Artists. Kristal owned the club until it closed in 2006 over a rent dispute — making Living Colour's performance of "Open Letter to a Landlord" this night even more relevant and haunting — and he died almost two years to the date after the band blew the roof off the place.
