The black-and-white cover of Gemination, featuring the faces of mutant twins connected via a reptilian maze of God knows what, should serve as a warning to listeners preparing to spin the debut album by The Geminus Sect. This duo fuses industrial dervishes and rock melodies into an apocalyptic amalgam of hook-filled electronica, fuzzy guitars and creepy vocals. Think Marilyn Manson by way of the Sex Pistols and Nine Inch Nails.
Twin brothers Xevin (vocals, guitars, programming) and Xayne (vocals, bass, programming) like wordplay, giving songs such titles as "Saddomasochrist" and "Slavior". They wear masks that look similar to Gemination's molten cover image. They scream and pummel and rage in detached fits of fury. And even though it's not included here, they actually cover Kiss' "Two Sides of the Coin" on Undressed, the new tribute to that band's Unmasked album.
The cumulative effect of Gemination is exhausting yet oddly cathartic. I can think of much worse discs to listen to for 48 minutes.
