Longing for Dawn: Between Elation and Despair
Canada's own Longing for Dawn has recently breathed its last opus of hopelessness, Between Elation and Despair. Funeral Doom is not an easy type of music to digest, so to speak. Some acts are able to turn it into something more appealing though, if you can give it the time and careful listens it deserves. This type of Doom commands your undivided attention, to unveil all of its subtleness of a un-head-banging nature.
Between Elation and Despair is made of four long lasting (9 -16minutes), desperate compositions. The ultra slow pace of this genre, with the crushingness of the guitar playing and the deep growls are forming the backbone of this art. Longing for Dawn includes in this scenario, hues of harmonies in the shape of clean guitar work, electronics and keyboards. The latter really coming handy for adding this non-healing wound of sadness and depressive patterns. They sound either ambient or spacey most of the time. On the last, and longest composition, "The Piscean Dawn", the keys are shedding an extra touch of eerie by sounding like a fantomatic Gregorian chant of sort. This impressive track is not only slow and crushing, but a cool ghostly atmosphere is omnipresent in the sonic structure.
Between Elation and Despair is not only for fans of Doom and Funeral Doom, but for all the listeners enjoying atmosphere and eerieness in their music.
