The Agonist's second album, Lullabies for the Dormant Mind, has the Canadian group presenting metal fans with an album sure to quench their thirst for stirring hard metal.
This band sure are exciting performers; they regularly exhibit their flair delivering complicated music on this their newest release. Alissa Whit-Ghiz is undeniably a fine and diverse vocalist, don't let her angelic looks deceive you, this is one scary lady, transforming between the voice of a demon spewing its anger to lighter clean melodic tones, for quite the contrast in vocal ranges.
Forget any peaceful introduction, as "The Tempest (The Siren's Song; The Banshee's Cry)" shatters any tranquility you may be experiencing, this furious amalgamation of vocals and instruments sounds great. Screaming infuriated vocals introduce "And Their Eulogies Sang Me To Sleep",which is a wild animated track. "Swan Lake" sees the light again, also making an appearance on the latest Dark Moor album. With no metal what so ever The Agonist use this as a vocal showcase with their interpretation of the classic original, also quite a different addition in the context of the other tracks. The Agonist set out with this album lyrically to tackle "Some of society's biggest issues, including animal testing, drug abuse, eating disorders, environmental protection and man's inhumanity towards animals and each other", and they are certainly a poignant read.
The Agonist's Lullabies for the Dormant Mind, is, with the exception of "Swan Lake", a vigorous, complex undertaking for those who will take the chance to listen.
