Mantic Ritual: Executioner

Thrash Metal- the genre with rampant swift tempos and aggressive shredding riffs, also quite complex at times. Spawning many of the biggest Metal bands, there's no denying the skills possessed by the majority of the musicians involved, such as the likes of guitar wizard Alex Skolnick and legendary drummer Dave Lombardo.

Mantic Ritual are another new band to join the Thrash fold, but the question is, can this band match it with the big guns, or are they just another to add to the growing list of acts eager to rekindle the flame and jump on the bandwagon? Time and experience will tell, but this album isn't a bad way to launch their band. Executioner is the title of Mantic Ritual's debut, with the dark cover art to their lyrics; this is classic Thrash full of death, destruction, gigantic riffs and lively performances. Revolutionary this album isn't, preferring to stay old school, as Mantic Ritual are obviously playing the music they love and helping to keep that classic Thrash sound alive, and undoubtedly many a moshpit filled with devoted head bangers.

The band dive straight in with the explosive "One By One", a rapid piece that settles down for the traditional mid paced groove before setting off at pace again. "Black Tar Sin" is another of the tracks where the band alternates the tempo, without any drop in intensity. "Next Attack" has Mantic Ritual turning down the pace for the most part with some catchy riffs, reminiscent of early Metallica. In short, Executioner should provide a good launching pad for Mantic Ritual's Thrash career.

Mantic Ritual: Executioner

My Score:

Balls to the wall; pedal to the metal, whichever way you want to describe Executioner, the debut album from American thrash metal band Mantic Ritual, is fast and furious from the first song to the last.

In the band are Jeff Potts (guitar), Dan Wetmore (lead vocals, guitar), Ben Mottsman (bass) and Adam Haritan (drums). The band originally formed in Pittsburgh under the moniker of Meltdown but had to change their name for reasons unbeknownst to me. Shortly thereafter they moved to L.A. to jump start their career.

Galloping riffs as in the title track and the relentlessly pummeling guitar and drum attack in the album opening "One By One" are good examples of what this band is all about. The vocals are more barked than sung so if that's in your repertoire you will likely be pleased. I would have preferred some cleaner vocals mixed in but that's just a matter of preference.

The artwork is well done, quite dark and disturbing, suitable for a metal release of this nature.

For those of you into heavy thrash style metal, Mantic Ritual should satisfy that itch quite nicely. The album was originally released in 2009 and has recently been reissued on the classy Metal Mind Productions label.
