Here is another full length debut album, this time a self produced effort from the progressive/folk band called Ironwood. This new Aussie metal group from Sydney Australia is quite the innovative group of musicians, applying progressive elements to the folk metal genre with their CD titled :Fire: Water: Ash:.
:Fire: Water: Ash: is the work of members Henry Lauer on vocals and bass, drummer Dan Nahum and guitar/vocals from both Matthew Raymond and Phil Brown. "Önd Ascending" is the lighter, peaceful opener, where as "The Oncoming Storm" brings the metal, especially when this track launches into a frenzied instrumental section following with some evil vocals. Speaking of which there is quite an assortment of vocals on this album, varying from lighter to harder clean arrangements, to those much darker black metal instances. I suppose the same could be said about the level of heaviness through their compositions, with numerous alterations, all this equates to a diverse album. There are also many sounds of nature used on this release, adding to the atmosphere.
Ironwood aren't your ordinary metal band, :Fire: Water: Ash: is an engaging collection of well executed inviting tunes, but give this release time, as I appreciated the album more with repeated listens and I'm sure you will as well.
