Jokers, The: The Big Rock & Roll Show

If you are looking to make a big impression with your debut album then getting long-time AC/DC collaborator Mike Fraser to mix it is a definite step in the right direction. Luckily for The Jokers this is exactly what has happened to them after they took a chance and called Fraser's office to see if he would take a listen and the result is The Big Rock and Roll Show, a debut album that is literally oozing with quality all the way through. The Jokers are a four piece consisting of vocalist Wane Parry, guitarist Paul Hurst and Simon Hurst and Chris Bate on bass and drums respectively. Having been together since 2006 they hail from Liverpool and cite their influences as Zeppelin, Cream, The Who and Kiss amongst others and to that list you can definitely add the Stones and Aerosmith as they succeed in capturing something of the assured swagger of both bands in their prime.

After bursting out of the blocks with the infectious 'V.I.B.E.' the band get their message across quickly and without any frills; just a rock solid combination of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. The smooth, laid back 'Ocean of Kings' is more than a nod in Robert Plant's direction and the album hits a real purple patch with the insistent grooves of the title track and 'Studio 54'. If the songs here are anything to go by then clearly they will be capable of whipping up a storm on stage and the likes of 'Get Down and Jam' are 'Super Groover' are simply begging to be heard in the live setting. The album closes strongly with the near-ballad 'Hell To LA' and at just nine songs you'll certainly be left wanting more.

Another band from the UK who have a retro vibe and combine it with a modern twist, The Jokers are capable of making big strides over the next few years; The Big Rock and Roll Show is released on June 29th.
