The cool cover art of Death North Kvlt will attract the listener into the frozen world of Northern Russia' own, Old Wainds. Founded back in 1995, Old Wainds has just come up with their third full length in their career. The trio remained unchanged until 2006, when Kull left the band. The interesting point about this Russian act, is the fact that it was established from the beginning that they will not do any concerts; the type of band I would join personally. Another kvlt aspect of this band being the fact of not having a website, at least this is what the promo sheet is saying.
The most interesting point about Old Wainds remains the music itself. This is pure, good old freezing Black Metal, no more no less. When I saw that it was compared to Watain, I said to myself: "Yes, that makes sense". Death North Kvlt is, in deed, the "in your face" melodic type of Black Metal. The riffing is juicy and even catchy at times; the lead guitar work quite harmonious, and increase the melodic sound, while the drumming is nicely kicking. As far as I can decipher, the lyrics are written in their native tongue, fitting perfectly for telling the stories from those beyond the polar circle regions. Old Wainds manage to include a bit more atmosphere and electronics/samplings to complete their "cool" Nordic song structures. Death North Kvlt does not break any new ground, but it does have a slight adventurous edge.
A few frozen "hits" are worth checking like: "Storm-Whip", "Cruel Black Death" , "Blood Stained" and "Death North Kvlt".
