Afterdawn: Break

This four piece band from New York City seems to be about 25 years misplaced. With a sound right out of the 80's, this female fronted blues rock unit is destined to be one of the most sought after bar bands on the east coast.

While lead singer Corynne Wilder does her best Bonnie Raitt imitations on heavier songs like "Bury It Deep" and "Peacemaker" she never manages to pull out the same emotional responses that Bonnie can. Corynne does have a good voice for this dated material. Listening to this CD makes me think of the type of group that wants to be the ultimate bar band. They play music that is familiar to all in the place, not very inventive or creative but have the old style bluesy attitude that goes so well with an inebriated condition. This is one of the most musically clichéd album that I have listened to in quite awhile.

There is obvious talent in the band. Corynne would do well with something meatier in their repertoire and the rest of the band needs a good dose of creativity and/or originality in their songwriting. I am not saying this is a bad work. It is just one of the many discs of this genre I receive that seem to be interchangeable with each other. Nothing on it stands out or makes me react to it one way or the other.
