Regain's reissue of the 1994 debut from Swedish black metal legends Nifelheim once again brings the unique music of these crazy Satanist's to the attention of the metal masses. Imagine a cross between Motorhead, Venom, Hellhammer, Bathory, and Gorgoroth, and you have an idea of the manic sounds permeating this 30 minute debut. Once look at the leather, chains, and spikes that adorn their wardrobes, and you know Nifelheim mean business. The album was recorded at Studio Fredman and produced by Frederik Nordstrom, so you know this is a great sounding platter of blasphemy. Most of the songs are short and to the point, packed to the gills with pounding drum blasts and crushing riffs, as well as Hellbutcher's maniacal vocal wailings. Session guitars on this one were performed by none other than the late Jon Nodtveidt from Dissection and John Swetsloot, and they do a fine job, even tossing in a multitude of nimble solos on many of the tracks. All the tunes are decent, though it's hard to pick out favorites as so race along at a similar path, but "Sodomizer", with it's effective harmony guitars and epic arrangements, and the chugging, highly manic "Storm of Satan's Fire" stand out a bit from the rest. Things are basically full speed ahead from start to finish, with no rest in sight, so if you dig your black metal old school, Satanic, and frenzied, then make sure you check this classic debut out if you didn't catch it the first time around.
