Chronical Diarrhoea: The Last Judgment/ Salomo Says (remaster)

Formed in the late 80's Germany's Chronical Diarrhoea was a short lived thrash / crossover outfit that released a few independent EP's and two full length albums through Nuclear Blast before disbanding a few years later in 1990. This remastered collection from Metal Mind Productions brings together one of those EP's and the two albums all in one collection.

Originally consisting of Reiner (vocals), Roman (drums), Ilja (bass) and Thorsten (guitars), this disc serves up a staggering fifty tracks of pure, straight ahead, no holds barred thrash / hardcore. Rather than present the bands efforts chronologically this compilation kicks off interestingly enough with their second and final album The Last Judgement. The second EP Abstract Carnage is sandwiched in the middle and the first full length effort Salomo Says closes things out. So for an interesting perspective on how Chronical Diarrhoea progressed sonically you can either start in the middle with "Go Slow" off Abstract Carnage or dive right into "Shit World" from Salomo.

A lot of the songs here are nothing more than simple, direct blasts of violent aggression as for example the shortest track "Passion" clocks in at only seven seconds, while the majority of the rest of the material usually falls somewhere between the one and two minute range. The band is propelled by Thorsten's jagged, thrash infused riffs and Ilja's briskly executed, thick and elastic sounding bass lines, and drummer Roman provides plenty of breakneck, rapid fire grooves. Along with their musical resemblance to bands like DRI, Nuclear Assault and Suicidal Tendencies the band injects plenty of biting humor and scathing criticisms into their lyrics as well, all served up by Rainer's gruff sounding hardcore vox. This is best exemplified on such tracks as "Indifference", "Hate You", "A Contradiction" and the mock "You wanted the best, you got the best" Kiss intro on "Ommes kills. The band even shows their experimental side on the song "Attack of The Blurr Demons" which consists of nothing more than a series of sonically enhanced belching. Ok, so much for them having an experimental side, but you get the picture.

While The Last Judgment unfortunately ended up being Cronical Diarrhoea's swansong, it wouldn't be last we would hear of Reiner and Thorsten. The duo conceived a completely new project called Bohren & der Club of Gore in 1992 (a band which continues to this day, albeit minus Reiner), which found them branching out in an entirely different direction by combining elements of jazz and ambient music together. This fantastic, Metal Mind reissue which comes in their familiar limited edition, gold disc, digipak is a great way to discover a band who might have otherwise been relegated to the ranks of obscurity forever. If you're a fan of the late 80's crossover scene and you missed Chronical Diarrhoea the first time around, then this is your opportunity to get ¾ of their released output in one copious shot.
