Get down and boogie. That is what you have with this disc that takes a giant leap backwards into the blues based music that has been the domain of people like The Allman Brothers and to some extent ZZ Top. With enough slide guitar to make Lonesome Dave Peverett roll over in his grave, Hillbilly Prophets take you back to a style of music that is very appealing in a "getting drunk at the honky tonk" kind of way.
While the disc is as good of a Southern Boogie band that you will ever hear from Los Angeles, it is one where you will be playing the where I have heard that riff before for a good portion of the record. Shades of the Allmans, Skynard, Molly Hatchet, Joe Bonassama, Foghat, etc… permeate the disc to the point that this sounds like a CD that tries way to hard to follow in the footsteps instead of creating their own path.
That might sound harsh and I don't mean it to be since a fan of this style will like this disc as long as they don't expect any ground breaking new trends here. I am a fan and enjoyed this one as a good example of the music I grew up with. "Listen To The Voice" is a song that although different, it will keep you thinking, I have heard this before. That is what I mean to say. While doing their own thing, Prophets follow too closely the sound of their influences.
I also have to say that the guitar work on this disc is exceptional. You will be looking for the sour mash as you listen to the dynamic slide work on here. Even with this aspect the same feeling that a good portion is a mash up of other stuff that you have heard before comes through.
All in all, this disc is like a combination of all those old good old swamp rock and blues based bands that we all grew up with. It is a good time album that has no bad spots, it just don't have any really grabbers on it either.
The disc also contains the videos for the songs "Listen To The Voice" and "Re-Align the Lines". This is a good touch that is interesting for a few plays like most videos but will be forgotten for the most part.
