Aritomo: Kowai Komorebi

Kowai Komorebi is a re-issue of Japanese folk artist Aritomo's first album. Originally issued only on vinyl it is now available for the first time on CD courtesy of Beta-lactam Ring Records.

While his whisper like vocal style is a bit of an acquired taste Aritomo's real strength here lies in his ability to weave, subtle, delicate acoustic guitar passages and intertwine them with the natural, relaxing atmospheres of his own field recordings. Every once and a while he'll break out an additional instrument such as the bamboo flute or he'll tack on some electronically treated guitar for added textures on a track like "White Daytime" and "In The White Shadow Which the Lily Drops", which features a brief, cascading outro solo. Other than that he prefers to keep things pretty basic by mainly relying on just his guitar and voice to create a relexad and laid back listening environment.

Kowai Komorebi certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's hard to ignore the somewhat eccentric nature, and at times naïve qualities that Aritomo brings to the table on this recording.
