Continuing on with my mission to go through Pulverised Records' promo stack, it is now time for Conspiracy. This CD is rather nice, and a bit of a surprise. Once again though, no info is being provided by the label. By looking at the pretty strange cover art, I felt like facing a raw sketch taken from Roger Dean's drawing board. Could this be a progressive album then? Not really, although it has some hints of that type of music also. Concordat is simply a Black Metal album, seriously!
This is melodic Black Metal recorded with a slightly raw production. The lead guitar is really running the show on this disc, and this instrument is playing multiple parts in the song structure. The musicianship of those guys is good, as well as their song writing abilities. Concordat has many of the traditional Black Metal elements: discrete rasps, tremolo pickings and so on. Additionally, it also includes tempo variations, guitar solos (numerous and some are really nice), calmer passages, crunchiness in the riffing, plus that prog edge already mentioned. What a nice surprise then to hear an acoustic twelve strings on top of all this! This is especially tasty on track # 5, "Faith", where that instruments is omnipresent, and where a certain folksy mood is settling. The vocals on that last one are clean contrasting nicely with their usual harsher tones. "Die in Style", has one of those good solos. The following title track is being introduced by the very melodic sound of a twelve string.
All in all, Concordat is one of the couple of promos received from Pulverised Records that were interesting.
