Here we have a CD that can be put under the Avant-garde jazz/ noise umbrella. Linden consists of 14 tracks, 12 of the tracks are inspired by Ron Linden paintings plus 2 re-mixes. The 12 paintings are included in the CD booklet, and the whole release clocks in at just over 52 minutes.
The compositions are all multi track recordings of different sound effects, guitar, digital percussion and manipulated recordings. At first listen this CD reminded me a bit of the work of Tim Brady and Buckethead, but more abstract and a lot less technical guitar playing. Each track contains many different sound ideas, but at the same time can be very repetitive. Many times a short drum loop or sound effect is played over and over again creating a lot tension, but this tension is never fully resolved. This made much of tracks have a cold feeling. This may have been intentional because many of the paintings gave me the same feeling.
In the end I felt the CD lacked a lot of emotion, therefore would not have me wanting to play it often. I would recommend this CD to anyone that is bored with more popular structured music and time signatures. Sometimes it is good to listen to something different to widen your perspective on music.
