Atkins, Al: Demon Deceiver...Plus
Forty years since the formation of Judas Priest, original vocalist Al Atkins has his 2007 Demon Deceiver album reissued by Angel Air in a package that adds a couple of bonus tracks from his current band Holy Rage. Atkins role in the formation of Priest should not be underestimated and his story will shortly be told in full by way of a full biography written in collaboration with rock journo Neil Daniels, Dawn of the Metal Gods. Daniels contributes the comprehensive liner notes that accompany this release and provide an overview of Atkins career after his departure from Priest in 1973 that led to Rob Halford joining the band.
For Demon Deceiver Atkins is joined by guitarist Simon Lees (Budgie) with Brian Tatler (Diamond Head) and Bernie Torme also making guest appearances. Atkins frazzled delivery combines with some consistently solid riffs to make for a decent old school metal album that will appeal to fans of both Priest and NWOBHM. Versions of Priest's 'Victim of Changes' and 'Dreamer Deceiver' are included but the majority of the songs are Atkins' penned originals with 'God Help Me' and 'Cradle To The Grave' arguably the pick of the bunch, Lees providing some blistering solos on both. Overall this all equals another very worthwhile package from Angel Air.
