From Singapore comes Sanity Obscure (SG), a four-piece death metal act, whose brand new EP Dethrone the King is not exactly going to set the extreme metal world on fire, but it does show a band who have some skills and could make a real statement somewhere down the road. It's obvious the band cut their teeth on acts such as Morbid Angel, Death, Believer (their name comes from one of Believer's albums), and Kreator, as they combine brutal old school death metal with 80's European thrash for a sound that lacks polish but certainly has plenty of underground feel. Though there's only 4 tracks here, each one is approximately four minutes long or more so you get close to 20 minutes of music, the best being the heavy, groove laden "Thrashing the False" and the pummeling blast of "Nuclear Exploitation", the latter complete with crushing riffs and relentless drum barrages. The title track tries to be more technical than it needs to be, and quite frankly these guys aren't quite where they need to be yet with their chops to pull off what they probably intended, so the results come across as a tad forced and sloppy. "Deliberate Violation", while decent from an attitude perspective, has too much of a generic feel and pales to the other three numbers. All in all, you get two really solid cuts here, but the other two show that they band still needs a little seasoning. Lead vocals by Kount Cider (yes, you heard that right!) are a mix of gravelly thrash screams and death metal growls, and fit the music nicely, though the lyrics tend to be rather run of the mill extreme metal fodder.
Sanity Obscure (SG) show some promise, and it will be interesting to see how they progress from this point on. For the time being, some work on their musical chops and songwriting skills are in order before they begin a possible full-length follow up.
Oh, the (SG) is to differentiate them from a German act of the same name apparently.
