The new EP from this Dutch band shows promise for all prog metal fans but still lacks the punch and quality to keep you coming back for more. While at times the musicianship of the group is outstanding, it is the quite boring vocal delivery of Joris Bod that keeps this disc from rising above the level of mediocrity. His vocals are capable for the short run as in his best effort "Straw Men" but even throwing in a death metal growl here and there does not hide the fact that he has a very limited range and hinders the overall effort.
Musically this disc is a prog metal dream as these guys take the technical ability of a Dream Theater and combine it with the heaviness of an Opeth to deliver a totally terrific sound that although not out of the ordinary, is something that is very enjoyable to any metal fan. Taken in short doses, this is an album that has its moments. The title track "Confess" is a dynamite tune which even Bod's vocals work well on but you will still have the feeling that they could do much better with someone else at the microphone.
I will purchase their next disc without reservation. They are a group that has enough to offer for at least a look at what they might bring to the table. Confess might not be the best disc I have heard lately but it is one that I will dust off now and then to hear the high quality guitar of Raymon van Vught and the powerful bass work of Willem Elbers. This combo is the real deal and is the secret weapons in the Sin Committee arsenal.
