Christian Hard Rock/Prog Rock band, Orphan Project return with their 2nd full length record, Spooning Out The Sea (NePlusUltra Music), a record that will find a home with fans of Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, Dream Theater and even Kansas. Powerful and aggressive are the first words that come to mind with this release, and with Spooning Out The Sea, guitar driven is another phrase that is very important. From the opening eerie and dark piano notes it's obvious that this is going to be a quite serious record.
Orphan Project consists of Shane Lankford – Vocals, Tim Kehring – Drums & Vocals, Bill Yost – Bass & Vocals, John Neiswinger – Keyboards & Vocals and Shane McBride - All Guitars, their 10 track Spooning Out The Sea is a Melodic Hard Rock record with quite a lot of Prog Rock influence throughout. As mentioned earlier, the first band of reference that came to mind for me was Evanescence. With nice clean and clear soaring vocals from Shane Lankford, a male version of Amy Lee's band is a fair comparison. Not as in the face and brash as Evanescence, but I think you get the picture, a very modern, guitar driven with a deep bed of keyboards and piano to add depth and texture with good vocals. Ranging from soft reflective songs like "One Dark Moment (Providence)" that builds up off of sad piano and violin to end with a great climax, while to epic rockers like "Reach", that paint a dark and dreary landscape over which Lankford delivers great raspy vocals in this Prog-ish tune and then straight up rockers like "Head on Your Platter", deliver the heaviest guitar riffing on the record. Orphan Project have delivered a deep, almost complex album.
All throughout Spooning Out The Sea, melodic is the word that keeps coming to mind. While Orphan Project have successfully incorporated elements of current Prog Rock, Hard Rock and even some slight Metal overtones, it is all done with a great deal of melody and they make it all work quite well. Their vocals over that keyboard element of texture, just completely adds another dimension of melody that works with what ever genre the songs wanders into. Spooning Out The Sea is just a pleasurable record to listen to and with each song being different than the next, Orphan Project provide you with a nice voyage to go out on. Close your eyes and take a listen!
