Canis Dirus is a bit of an atypical Black Metal duo. These guys don't wear corpse paint, no studs or kvlt type of clothing, they are almost bold and their take on Black Metal is closer to the European style. Nonetheless, all those nos don't add up to a negative release, far from it. Originating from Minnesota, TMP (all instruments) and RH (vocals) are taking their inspiration from a disdain for the human race in its destructive relationship with nature.
Black metal and nature are elements I enjoy in underground music, and they both go together very well. A Somber Wind From a Distant Shore is the band's debut and it was recorded at multi-instrumentalist TMP's home studio, Harsh Winter Studio. Their musical influences appear to come from Europe, mainly France, Italy, Germany as well as from Norwegian kvlt act, Burzum. Perhaps you can find a bit of an American feel, such as Xasthur, in the suffocating atmosphere. Heavily distorted is the guitar work and the pace is normally moderate; both great elements promising a real juicy crushingly fine musical treat. This does not mean this opus is unmelodic though, since TMP's work could be as refined with delicate arpeggios and leads. Some ambient keyboards and a touch of acoustic guitar are gracing the sound structure in a few places too. As for the vocals of RH, let's just say they are of a desperate / tortures and sick nature, which goes hand in hand with the depressive edge this music is carrying.
A Somber Wind From a Distant Shore is a solid and excellent introduction to the underground music world; filled with only great Black Metal compositions. My vote goes to "Garden of Death" for my overall favorite number.
