Finnish guitarist Jani Liimatainen has formed the new band Cain's Offering, after joining forces with, amongst others, Stratovarius singer Timo Kotipelto, and former bandmate and earlier Sonata Arctica member, talented keyboard player Mikko Harkin (many I am sure have been following his playing since his time spent years ago with Kenziner, including this writer). Cain's Offering also benefits with contributions from members Jukka Koskinen on bass and drummer Jani Hurula.
As a comparison to Jani's last band, Cain's Offering is more like earlier Sonata Arctica, well played melodic and catchy metal; the rapid "Dawn Of Solace" could easily fit on pre- Unia CDs. I do prefer Gather The Faithful to that bands most recent releases, and it really gives the latest Stratovarius a good run also, in fact, overall Gather The Faithful just beats Polaris in my opinion.
But they aren't a clone of Sonata Arctica, no sir, as Cain's Offering are one of the best new melodic metal bands to hit the genre, Jani and Miko have become a great combination, both being fine musicians and of course they can't go wrong with Timo's vocals. Gather The Faithful has many striking solos like on the excellent "Oceans Of Regret", which is such a fine uplifting song. Instrumental and title track "Gather The Faithful" is a powerful, technical, and catchy tune, and mixes well with the rest of the songs on the CD.
Cain's Offering are a shining light, and if you are a metal fans like myself who isn't enjoying the turn some similar bands have taken lately, Gather The Faithful is a great alternative.
