Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in 1980, this fantastic summit between legendary guitarists John McLaughlin, Paco DeLucia, and Larry Coryell is finally available on DVD. The three performed numerous concerts in Europe throughout 1979 and 1980 before Coryell was replaced by Al DiMeola. The musicianship here is mezmerizing to say the least. Coryell and DeLucia rip through the manic opener "Entres Dos Aguas", which greatly showcases DeLucia's immense flamenco chops. McLaughlin then joins the show and the trio launches into the lush "Lotus Feet", the mystical "Morning of the Carnival", and the Mahavishnu Orchestra classic "Meeting of the Spirits." This tune is the showcase piece of the set, lasting roughly 24-minutes, and features some wild playing. McLaughlin and Coryell trade off some fiery licks on their respective Ovation acoustic guitars, before DeLucia joins the fray with plenty of rapid fire flamenco bursts. For the encore, the trio play the baroque-meets-flamenco "Guardian Angels", a real molodic and majestic piece that highlights all three players. The crowd loved every minute of it!
As for extras, there's a fun intro on the DVD that shows the three players in the dressing room before the show warming up, and the Special Features menu has a discography and biography for all three guitarists. The concert itself though is just a tad over 45-minutes, and it would have been nice if they included the full set here. The cover of the DVD case is rather odd, as instead of showing a photo from the actual concert, it has a photo of Coryell from apparently the 60's, and the shots of McLaughlin and DeLucia are definitely recent, as each looks significantly older. Otherwise this is a must own for guitar fans!
