Cirrha Niva: For Moments Never Done

A terrifying 911 call set against frantic drums and razor-sharp riffs opens "The Fooling," the massive first track on Cirrha Niva's third full-length CD, For Moments Never Done. It succeeds in capturing the listener's attention, and for the next 46 minutes never lets go.

Hailing from the Netherlands, this quintet calls itself a progressive-metal band. And it's easy to hear the Maiden, Dream Theater and Pain of Salvation influences here, but you'll also find musical references to Van Halen ("Dreamon"), Megadeth ("Self-Chosen"), Shadow Gallery ("Spring Before Winter") and Evergrey ("Golan Heights"). Hell, the band even cites Blues Traveler and the Dixie Chicks on its MySpace page, so you know you're in for a diverse listening experience. Cirrha Niva isn't afraid to call for help, either, as keyboard player Joost van den Broek adds atmospheric elements throughout the album, and Bouke Visser contributes a chilling Floydian sax solo in "Spring Before Winter."

These are long songs seven tracks in just under 47 minutes and packed with plenty of lyrics but new vocalist Legrand's expressive style moves the album along with ease. Of course, it doesn't hurt that he is backed by extremely confident players who make all of this sound so easy.

Cirrha Niva: For Moments Never Done

My Score:

Progressive metal has always been a crowded genre with many bands taking the Symphony X or Dream Theater sound alike route and there is nothing wrong with that but that is not the case here. Cirrha Niva is a band I had been unfamiliar with until I received their 2009 release For Moments Never Done for review.

The band formed in 1993 and released their debut The Mirror World Dimensions in 1997 followed by Enter The Future Exit (1999) and Liaison De La Morte (2001). A lot of time had elapsed between albums but it certainly didn’t hurt the end product as For Moments Never Done is an excellent progressive metal disc. The musicianship is tight all around and the music is quite varied using moody atmospheres and chugging riffs to great effect. Heavy guitar progressions will transition into calm atmospheric moodiness in a very smooth and natural way. These guys are certainly very talented. Noteworthy guitar solos abound at any number of speeds and are always very engaging. The vocals are also very strong and emotive with both clean and extreme singing. “The Fooling” begins with a 911 call, serving to set the song’s tense mood. The growls and clean vocals are very dramatic and the music with its changing meters and mix of heavy and light is extremely fulfilling. Superb vocals and guitar highlight the catchy “Dreamon” followed by the aurally stunning “Framed”, eight minutes of scintillating guitar and changing moods. This has to be one of the disc’s best tracks.

For Moments Never Done is an impressive prog metal album, not really copying anyone yet sounding familiar at the same time. I can’t wait to hear more of the band’s work. Recommended.
