Stalwarts of the British rock scene for over forty years, Status Quo are back in business with their new release entitled In Search of the Fourth Chord, their 33rd album to date. Originally released overseas in 2007 it has finally made it to the shelves in North America. The fact that Status Quo has remained so vibrant after all these years is a true testament to the band. With their steady dose of boogie inflected rock and roll and some blues thrown into the mix, this platter should please long time fans of the band.
Starting with the upbeat rock of "Beginning Of The end" and its pleasant guitar riff and melody you just know this will be a great listen. Status Quo have always been about giving the fans what they want like the feel good rock of "Alright" with its southern boogie theme and honky tonk piano in the background. One of my favourite tunes is the catchy "Pennsylavania Blues Tonight", a nice blend of pop and rock with an irresistible chorus and a guitar melody that will stay in your head long after the song is finished. The melodies continue with the infectious "I Don't Wanna Hurt You Anymore", another rocker featuring the fine piano work of Kevin McAlea. The band slows things down with the slow burning blues of "Electric Arena" featuring a steady keyboard melody and bluesy lead guitar, before returning to the heavy boogie rock of "Gravy Train". The rest of the album is just as good with nary a dud to be heard.
So there you have it folks. In Search Of The Fourth Chord should really please fans of the band and maybe even gain a few new ones. Solid musicianship, irresistible melodies and an overall positive vibe make the latest Status Quo an enjoyable release and one that I will be returning to whenever I get that rock 'n' roll itch. Check it out, these veteran rockers deserve it.
