Status Quo: Pictures-Live at Montreux 2009 (DVD)

Are you ready to boogie? Well, then you've come to the right place! 2009 saw the second appearance by British rock legends Status Quo at the esteemed Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland (their first was in 2004 alongside old pals Deep Purple), and this DVD documents their entire 2 + hour set from that night, June 16th, 2009. Though these guys have been around for over 40 years and have thrilled audiences all over the world, they never really made it big here in the US, which is a real shame, as their brand of hard hitting party rock & boogie seemed tailor made for rock fans here in the States. If you've yet to discover the Quo, now's a good time to settle down in front of your flat screen TV and see what this band is all about.

The set list is a long one, 21 tracks in total, featuring some classic quo material, some medley's, and a few hard rockin' renditions of early rock 'n' roll classics. Many of their more memorable numbers, such as the early hits like "Ice in the Sun", "Caroline", and "Pictures of Matchstick Men", to their more recent songs like "Beginning of the End", "Creeping Up on You", and "Whatever You Want", permeate the set, with the band, despite their advancing age, rocking out like musicans half their age. At center stage are Francis Rossi & Rick Parfitt, each one handling guitars & vocals, and able to start up a great rapport with the audience as well as churn out bluesy, gritty guitar licks and charming vocals. Rounding out the band is Andrew Bown on keyboards/guitars/vocals, John Rhino Edwards on bass/vocals, and drummer Matthew Letley. What the band lack in finesse they more than make up for in enthusiasm and sheer feel, as their songs grab you by the balls and force you to have a rockin' good time. Think of a less heavy Humble Pie, a more melodic AC/DC, a less virtuoso Rory Gallagher, a tighter Rolling Stones, and you get somewhat of an idea of what a Status Quo experience is all about.

With a two hour show, this DVD is loaded with live fun from the Quo-like I mentioned earlier, if you've never experienced this band before, live is probably the best way to do it, and since the band never seems to make it over here to the US, this DVD is the perfect way to join in on the fun.

My Score:

*******This is a review of the 2010 Blu Ray release of Live at Montreux*******

My wife walked by our 47 inch LCD HD television while I was playing the new Blu Ray release of Status Quo's Live at Montreux 2009 concert and asked "who are the old guys playing the live concert, and what channel is it on?". Yes, the high-definition quality of this show on Blu Ray is that superb folks, as if the band were playing live in your living room. This is an absolutely stunning set, both in terms of the audio and visual quality of the presentation. Status Quo have been around forever, and you can take a musical journey with them throughout their storied career by watching this Blu Ray release.

"Roll Over Lay Down", "Whatever You Want", "Caroline", "Bye Bye Johnny", "Pictures Of Matchstick Men / Ice In The Sun", "Down Down", and many, many others are rocked with plenty of fire and purpose by the band, who still seem to be having a blast on stage, much like they did 40 years ago. This Blu Ray release contains some bonus features not included on the DVD, like a documentary of the event at Montreux and some interviews with the band. All in all, it's a treat for any fan of rock 'n' boogie, and show that Status Quo are still one of the hardest working bands in the business.
