Pretend for a moment that you had to limit yourself to
one breathtaking music experience a year. If that were
the case, you might as well limit yourself to "Fall
Betrays The Earth" on Ephemeral Sun's Prototype 19.5. Sure, the rest of it (especially the quirky but not too quirky instrumental work here--mainly the Rushlike ". . . Winter Has No Mercy") is all well and good but there's something about Laurie Ann Haus's voice at the top of that tune that makes you want to chuck it all
and leave the song on repeat all night and all day
until the end of the year. There's something about the
purity of it, something about the naked emotion of it
that hit me hard and left me reeling for this disc's
next three tracks.
Haus is a great asset to the band's sound and,
thankfully, they have the good sense not to overuse
her, something that you have to hope will carry over
when Ephemeral Sun make their stunning debut album.
Take your time, people, we know you want to get it
right. In the meantime, we'll hang onto this.
