Edgend: A New Identity

Melodic power metal is a genre I for one thoroughly enjoy, so I jump at the chance to hear a new band, such as Edgend, a stirring metal band from Israel and their energizing debut A New Identity.

"The name 'EDGEND' is a combination between the words Edge End meaning the sharpest point of the blade." well, just like a warriors blade, this band is sharp. The orchestral and dramatic tones of "Into The Equation - A Mask Without Identity" bring A New Identity to life, and then we are presented with more powerful music on "Internal Fire". The wonderful Symphony X was the first band I thought of upon hearing Edgend, which surely is a band that has inspired many. "Iternal Fire" has that heavy Symphony X progressive style vibe about it, dare I say too much at times, the vocals have a Russell Allen meets Ian Parry feel to them. If you are fond of music with an abundant serving of keyboards then tracks like the prompt "My Oath" will no doubt interest you. Actually all of Edgend's music is very appealing with some great keyboard/guitar solos, such as on track seven "The Pain", and "Winds Of The Abyss" is a very exciting instrumental for the progressive metal fans.

I enjoyed what A New Identity had to offer, hence my rating, and ultimately Edgend's CD is well worth your contemplation. But A New Identity is quite the interesting title for this band's debut, as I feel Edgend need to perhaps cut back a tad on the influences, and show us more of their own 'Identity' on future releases.

Edgend: A New Identity

My Score:

I just found another reason to visit the Holy Land. The melodic metal band called Edgend is something hard to resist and with a keen sense of their heritage in the lyrics, Edgend has produced an album not only musically uplifting but also spiritually as well. The land they come from and the historical background of their people play an important part in their music. It is refreshing to hear not only superb musicians but also music done with intelligence and lyrics that have real meaning.

Musically they are a treat for those who love melodic metal. Keyboardist David Ezuz makes this one a very special treat as he brings a classical feel to their sound with some very dynamic piano work on such numbers as "Winds From The Abyss" which also gets a boost with a terrific solo from guest keyboardist Kevin Codfert. Not that this is the only place where he shines, "My Oath", "Revelation" and "Balance" are just a few that have him applying his craft in such a fantastic manner. All through the album he gives the band a touch that sets them apart. Sure you can hear influences such as Symphony X and Dream Theater but if you are going to chose someone to model your group after they are not bad choices.

Guitarist Sharon Halachmi also keeps this disc very interesting with some terrific work throughout but I do have a favorite moment by him and that is on the song "Voices". He tears it up and lets everyone know that these guys can be as heavy as anyone. With a little snarl lead singer Rami Salmon also makes this tune a real treat. Speaking of Rami, he has quite a range from what you normally hear in this genre. If I was to classify him it is more of a James Labrie type vocal than anyone else as he takes it from a growl to a very dynamic clean voice that has a certain timbre very similar to Labrie.

Overall, this is a truly spectacular debut. This one sounds life crafty old veterans instead of some young upstarts and I am really looking forward to see where they take it from here.
