Various Artists: Paths Less Traveled, A Genterine Records
Comprised of 10 songs from 10 bands from the Atlanta
area, Paths Less Traveled offers surprisingly few
revelations, leaving listeners to sort through a
series of bands that never quite live up to their
promise. Paine's Promise (forgive the repetition of
words) does live up to theirs, sounding a little bit
akin to vintage Heart (and that sounds surprisingly
fresh at the moment). That promise carries over to The
Datura Blues whose "You Can't Baptize a Man with a
Half Lit Cigarette in his Mouth and a Bottle of
Bourbon in his Baptismal Robe," is a dirty,
psychedelic revelation if ever there was. Farpoint's
"H2Origins" is not one of my favorite FP numbers but
it suffices. Cobweb Strange, who open the whole
affair, are somewhat disappointing (of course, maybe
it's that we're forced to listen to nearly 12 minutes
of them on a sampler, a bit much even by prog
standards) though I'm interested in hearing more, the
same as with Karma Lingo. But nothing here's enough me to convince me to move to Atlanta and bask in the
warmth of their music scene.
