Blanc Faces: Falling From The Moon
Blanc Faces self titled debut made quite an impact on the melodic rock scene when it was released back in 2005 with it's silky smooth melodic tones that reminded of a whole host of genre leaders such as Journey or Survivor. Now nearly five years later comes follow up album Falling From The Moon which confidently picks up where that first album left off.
Based around the La Blanc brothers, Robbie (vocals, guitar) and Brian (backing vocals and bass) Blanc Faces unashamedly hark back to a time when hooks, choruses and catchy guitar and keyboard interplay ruled and it has to be said that they do it with style and confidence. With their album once more produced by the brothers themselves and mixed by the Midas touch of Dennis Ward every note and beat on Falling From The Moon is crystal clear and bright as a button, which for music of this ilk is vitally important.
Credit is also due to Brian and Robbie who between them wrote all the tracks included and across the twelve songs there is seldom a let up in quality and class. Opener "I Come Alive" is the sort of memorable up beat rocker that all melodic rock albums should state their intentions with. The beautiful chorus has hints of Dare at their best, while the keyboards hark back to Cutting Crew at their most subtly effective. It's a great mix and a great song. Brian's daughter Sophia, who at the age of nine named the title track is done proud by her father as "Falling From The Moon" is one of the best feel good rock songs you'll come across for quite some time. Right through the album the well constructed rockier tracks hit the spot again and again, "Like A Believer", "I Will" and "I Swear To You" all contain some smart guitar work and sumptuous keys that maintain the songs interest on repeated listens. Vocally Robbie is a master of his art with a voice that harks back to the day when this type of music sold by the bucket load, his syrupy tones compliment the lush musical background and it's a compliment to say he makes it all sound so easy.
The only slight niggle to be found is on the slower more ballad style tracks such as "Everything" or "Fly" which are just a touch too predictable and formulaic, they are not bad songs, just a bit safe.
Falling From The Moon is another excellent release from Frontiers, who really have been in a rich vein of form of late and whilst it falls just slightly short of it's predecessor, Blanc Faces second album is a cracker.
