For myself, the mighty Pagan's Mind, along with Symphony X, are the best progressive metal bands to come on the scene since the arrival of Dream Theater. Sure, there are countless others whose music I adore, but there is something special about these two, for my ears anyway. While we wait for SX to release a live DVD, Pagan's Mind's is here and available in three different versions, this one being the pick, but with limited numbers, 1000 hand numbered in fact so you better be quick to place an order. What do you get? Well this a Pagan's Mind fans wet dream, there's the exciting live CD and DVD, plus a bonus DVD with plenty of extra footage, an autographed photo and even a Pagan's Mind guitar pick, all contained in some alluring packaging.
Live Equation of course takes part of its name from Pagan's Mind last studio release, 2007's progressive metal blast fest God's Equation. Pagan's Mind perform their classics on this live release with ease, dishing out spirited performances to an enthusiast crowd of fans. The first track to get their heads banging and fists pumping is "Gods Equation", as ace guitarist Jorn Viggo Lofstad kicks it into gear. Jorn also stars on instrumental "Coming Home/Exploring Life" along with his band mates as they proceed to rip it up. Vocalist Nils K. Rue's commanding voice sounds marvelous, along with Steinar Krokmo's masterful bass playing, Ronny Tegner's dashing keyboards and the robust strokes of Stian L. Kristoffersen as he proceeds to pummel his drums, they show why they are one of the best, not just in the studio.
DVD number two starts with two more live recordings, three different tracks from Progpower and two from Ibsenhuset, Skien including a stellar performance of the fantastic "Osiris' Triumphant Return", much to my delight. There's even a look backstage with rehearsals of four songs, another very cool addition is footage from a performance back in the year 2000 with the original PM line-up, this and more amongst the other additional footage. All up Live Equation is quite simply essential viewing for Pagan's Mind followers.
