This is Metal Mind's companion CD to the live DVD of the same name, which some might remember was originally released in 2004, then reissued earlier this year with a bonus CD containing part of the original concert, and now the CD itself has been remastered and released on its own. Though the band basically split up a few years ago, there have been rumors that guitarist Tchort has been interested in possibly doing something again, but nothing has yet surfaced. If that fails to materialize, then these Norwegians have left behind a solid body of work, and a sprinkling of their output can be heard on this solid live set.
Heavy, Deep Purple/Uriah Heep styled numbers such as "Into Deep", "Crushed to Dust", and "Writings on the Wall" show just how far this band wanted to get from their black metal roots (many of the members were either current or former members of prominent black metal bands), as they crafted catchy, melodic hard rock/metal songs featuring strong vocals, beefy guitar riffs, and surging keyboards. For many fans, Green Carnation's greatest achievement was the concept album Light of Day, Day of Darkness, and a 23-minute part of that progressive metal epic is played here in all its glory. Other tunes in this set include the Porcupine Tree inspired "The Boy in the Attic", the dreary yet quite heavy "Myron & Cole", the moody "Rain", and the melodic and progressive closer "As Life Flows By".
Metal Mind's reissue comes complete with a charming booklet containing photos from the Poland concert and lyrics. If Green Carnation indeed stays retired for good, this is a fitting testament to their greatness.
