From Chattanooga Tennessee by way of Los Angeles come the Salerno's family pride and joy, brother and sister Michael and Christina who form the core of the metal band Within The Eddy. With this 4 song EP called Awaken they are out to take all of those fans who wish for a resurrection of the likes of Pat Benatar. Consisting of 3 originals and 1 cover tune, this disc shows a band filled with promise but not there yet.
Simplistic songwriting is the major drawback of this EP. While they are great tunes I bet live in a bar setting, the continuous use of repetitive guitar riffs wears thin. On each of the songs it seems like Michael latches onto a certain riff and does not let go! Repeating them endlessly until you feel the urge to pick up the six string and throw in a fill or two.
The main asset to the group is the voice of front woman Christina Salerno. She does have that smoky quality and it really comes out when they do what sounds like an updated torch song with the cover of Portishead's "Sour Times". On the originals, she is the strongest link in the chain. "Stranger" is the highlight of their own stuff and is a very good bit of metal. Michael actually gives his best performance and it is a song that shows the possibilities of this band. I will keep an eye out for them in the future as I am sure with a little seasoning they will become a tasty morsel, for now they are just a bit bland.
