Bosch: Bosch
"This is where I close my eyes…about two seconds into the first track. I've listened back to these recordings numerous times since they were imprinted, sometimes to tape, sometimes to digital ones and zeroes. Always the same…somehow never repeated…eyelids pulled by gravity – awaiting the various colors and changing scenes."
– Charles Greenleaf
Bosch are a three piece American band featuring Christopher Brown (drums, vocals, electronics, percussion, toys), Charles Greenleaf (guitar, keyboards, electronics, trumpet, percussion, vocals, looper, bass) and Kevin J Sims (basses, guitar, electronics, groove box). The band play music clearly in the realm of avant-garde with a high degree of experimentation. The above description is a somewhat colourful interpretation of what you will hear on their debut self-titled release. This is music with little structure and a large helping of improvisation and free form styles. Lots of weird percussion, heavy doses of electronics and strange effects are all part of the package. Erratic drumming and synthesized voice and samples also come into play adding to the strangeness found within. While I will give the band credit for the imaginative approach they have towards their craft, the music of Bosch for the most part lacks melody which makes this an extremely difficult listen, although I did like "Bishops" with its droning melody and strange percussive sounds. With little or no melody to support the songs, listening to Bosch became a little arduous.
Comparing Bosch to other artists is difficult but the promo material mentions the German band Faust as a similar artist. As I have not heard the aforementioned band I cannot validate that description. You will have to listen for yourself.
If strangeness is what you are searching for, by all means give this one a spin. As for me, I might try again in the future, but for now this one is a tough sell.
