The Resurrection Sorrow: Hour Of The Wolf

Whilst the non believers may not think so, groove, subtlety and precision are needed to make top quality stoner rock. Masters of the genre like Kyuss, COC or in their less aggressive moments Pantera all possess a swagger and restraint that makes the outright bludgeon in between all the more effective. However fail to add the correct proportions of the above mentioned ingredients and what you are left with is a pretty one dimensional onslaught.

Falling somewhere in between are NYC four piece The Resurrection Sorrow. When they hit their stride with winding, smacking guitars the results are impressive, "Soul Of The Soulless", or "Resurrect The Sorrow" both contain grooving engines that you can sit astride and be carried along on fist punching and neck jarring as you go, however miss-fires all too often interrupt the smooth ride with Alex Dementia's deep growl not having the cutting edge to boss the big slabs of sound. As the album moves on, his vocals actually start to restrict the music's ability to have the required impact.

Alex Coelho and Zak Gross are a fine guitar pairing (Coelho also handled bass) and Louie Gasparro whacks the drums with authority and precision, however in an already crowded stoner scene something special is needed to separate the wheat from the chaff and while describing The Resurrection Sorrow as chaff would be unfair, as there is definitely potential and power on show, they need to add some missing elements to make them stand out from the crowd.
