Celebrating over 30 years in the business, Relix, the Book-The Grateful Dead Experience is a lovely 'best of' volume containing a multitude of articles, interviews, and photographs from the legendary Relix magazine. Though it's mostly thought of as a magazine which celebrates the Grateful Dead and their fanbase, Relix has also been a champion of the whole 'jam band' scene as well. This near 250 page book is a collectors delight, featuring colorful images of many of the best covers that appeared over the years, as well as in-depth interviews with members of the Grateful Dead and other bands from the scene. A nice touch is the inclusion of some family trees for a few of these bands (Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jefferson Airplane/Starship), and a great foreward from Hot Tuna & Jefferson Airplane legend Jorma Kaukonen. However, it's not all just for Deadheads...witness the many colorful covers featuring Frank Zappa, The Who, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers Band, Pink Floyd, Chearp Trick, The Doors, The Cars, Eric Clapton, and even...Ozzy Osbourne! All done in full color, and quite attractive on the eyes. There's a plethora of vintage interviews with Jerry Garcia, and a fascinating article on Stevie Ray Vaughan when he was first bursting on the scene in 1983.
Grateful Dead fanatics, jam band lovers, and anyone into classic rock will want to add this fun trip down memory lane into their collection, regardless of whether you've ever read or owned an issue of Relix before.
