Kampen is Arckanum's third release that came out originally back in 1998. It is now being re-issued by French label, Debemur Morti, home of Black Metal.
The intro is of pure Shamaatae's style: dark with beastie sounds, percussions and a Shamanic feel. You then have a series of pure Black Metal madness. In those, few nature samplings are present. Instead, you'll get plenty of fast paces, raspy vocals; distorted guitar work treated with a slightly raw production, which is pretty similar to what we got on the previous album, Kostogher. The second half of Kampen is more interesting and varied. The nature samplings are more used and take the shape of: birds, owls, wind as well as some fire burning. The tempo calmed down from the fast mode on songs like: "Trulfylket, Rapz Ok Os", where you can hear some very good and juicy guitar riffs. On track # 9, "Nær Ok Fiær" (an instrumental), the listener is being lured into more crunchy riffing, tambourine and a bit of tribal percussions. This is one of the best compositions on this disc. Closing track, "Sangin Kaos", is a rather furious Black Metal hymn, not usually part of Arckanum's bag of tricks.
As it was the case with the sophomore release, I found Kampen more straightforward. Still, the nature samplings and Shamanic elements set Arckanum apart from the crowd.
