Graveworm / Wintress: Grim Horizons Split CD

Well, this was not as bad as I had expected. Graveworm and Wintress are both black metal bands that came up with eleven tracks with an unpolished production work. Both bands are actually different in their approach though.

Graveworm is heavy, grim, repetitive and even a little catchy on the side. They opted for a moderate tempo, which is always welcome in black metal. The compositions as such are quite similar, so not that much in term of variety is being offered to the listener. This is simplistic darkness. Wintress is much more interesting. Their songwriting is original and more complex. Still, the demo feel is being used. They added melodic lead guitar as well as some ambient keyboards. I personally found a couple tracks quite tasty. "Under the Pale Grey Light of the Moon", has clean arpeggios, strong bass lines, pounding drums and distorted guitars in the background. Track #10, "Reborn from Earth", comes with varied tempos, dissonant guitar leads, whispers, wicked vocals, ambient parts with strange sounds and so on. Wintress may not be considered as outstanding, but they brought home some cool tonalities and interesting material. If the band keeps polishing their art, we can have a pretty good black metal act to look out for in the future.
