After reviewing their recent split CD, I was not too hot about working on a 68 minutes plus output from this band. I was impressed though by the amount of releases this band has since their 1990 formation. Numerous demos, reh. (rehearsals?), splits, 7inches, MCDs, EPS and some full length to be found amongst the lot.
Even if my CD player indicated 11 tracks, Funeral Empire contains 17 tracks. From #15, you have live performances though I was not able to hear them since my copy skipped badly on these. I'm afraid I didn't miss much, because this band sticks pretty much to the same formula over and over. Here again you have some heavy/doomish black/death metal. Moderate, sometimes slower or faster in paces, fat bass, distorted guitars, rough vocals and, I believe, they use a drum machine. The music is rather simplistic and repetitive. A few compositions caught my attention like: "The Gates of Hell", "Prepare the Coffin" and "Tower of Shadows". Those songs either have a good doom metal vibe, wicked vocals, distorted arpeggios and the likes.
Funeral Empire had some moments, but this is not the type of black metal that makes me want to find out more about their work.
