Un Jour Si Blanc is the second release in a planned trilogy from French pianist Francois Couturier, a 60 minute solo piano excursion dedicated to filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Much of what you hear on this CD are brief impressions and improvisations, but it all seems to blend into one long tranquil suite made up of many movements. Couturier, with his keen sense of melody to go along with impeccable technique, takes the listener on a dreamy & atmospheric journey, as his choices of notes and classy runs never fails to impress.
Some of the more improvised numbers, such as "Der Blaue Reiter" and the four part "Color" offer a heightened sense of drama, which breaks up some of the more tuneful other selections, but it's the tracks that offer the brightest and richest tones, like "Voyage D'Hiver" and "Par Les Soirs Bleus D'Été" , that prove to be the real highlights here.
For some, a full hour of solo piano music might be pushing the limit a bit, even for the most loyal jazz lovers, but Francois Couturier has done a fine job with Un Jour Si Blanc. Fans of the solo piano work of Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and Paul Bley would be well advised to check this one out.
