Raven: Walk Through Fire

Walk Through Fire marks the return of NWOBHM veteran Raven after a nine year break between new studio releases that saw near tragedy when a wall collapsed on guitarist Mark Gallagher, crushing his legs. Together with bassist / vocalist brother John, Mark formed Raven back in 1975 in the North East of England and after making an impression with Rock Until You Drop and Wiped Out in the early 80's the eventually wound up on Atlantic who pushed the band Stateside leading to a minor hit with Stay Hard in 1985 and the single "On and On"

The new album is the bands 12th and finds the Gallagher brothers joined by US drummer Joe Hasselvander who has been with Raven since 1988 together with playing on albums for the likes of Pentagram, Cathedral and Blue Cheer. Thirteen tracks of nostalgic Speed / Thrash metal with a closing cover of Montrose's "Space Station #5" are proof enough that Raven have lost none of their raw energy and spark and John Gallagher can still hit a range that is right up there with Rob Halford in the days of British Steel / Screaming for Vengeance. The chugging grind of "Bulldozer" is a mid-point highlight but the whole album is one that will appeal to anyone who has fond memories of the NWOBHM and the bans that originated in that era. Frenzied riffing, meaty chords, double bass driven rhythms and piercing screams combine to make this the most satisfying Raven album in a long time. Welcome back.
