With four releases behind them, the death metal band Psycroptic has now captured an impressive live intense recording, so get set for the impact as "A Calculated Effort" begins the show. I had the chance to experience Psycroptic's music live last year and the sound unfortunately just wasn't quite clear enough to truly do Psycroptic's material justice, but thankfully that problem doesn't exist here.
Nile's drummer George Kollias is regarded as one of the best in his genre; well the guy that brings Psycroptic's express technical beats to life, Dave Haley, is another creative technical death metal ace. Together with the choice talents of guitarist Joe Haley and bass player Cameron Grant and completed with Jason Peppiatt's volatile vocals, you can't deny Psycroptic's potentency on this live recording.
Initiation is fittingly presented with menacing artwork, and also fantastic value, it was that long ago I had to pay this much or more just for a CD, here you get a CD and DVD with some brief extras, and the two track rehearsal footage is a cool addition. Filmed in their home country of Australia, Initiation offers no big stage performance with flashy effects, just a vigorous showing from Psycroptic, who have no problem duplicating twelve eruptive songs at Melbourne's HiFi Bar, giving their all for the animated fans.
