Carnifex: Hell Chose Me

One quick glance at the CD cover art for Hell Chose Me will quickly tell you that US deathcore band Carnifex mean business this time around. Not that their previous release The Diseased And The Poisoned was a collection of pop tunes by any means. This California act play fast and furious death metal sprinkled with that 'core attitude and some technical arrangements, and they've kicked things up a notch here. Often classified as one of Victory Records' heaviest and most extreme bands, Carnifex fit in well with acts such as Annotations of an Autopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, Psycroptic, Whitechapel, and Job For a Cowboy.

There's no shortage of screams, hardcore bellows, and death metal growls from Scott Lewis here on Hell Chose Me. In fact, he's developing into one of the more interesting vocalists on the extreme metal scene. It's almost, dare I say, enjoyable to hear him spewing all sorts of varied violence on pieces such as "Names Mean Nothing" and "Heartless", where he switches back and forth between maniacal screams, deep growls, and inhuman bellows. He's backed up by an endless array of crushing riffs, blast beats, and even the occasional breakdown, which are sure to go over well with the live audiences roaming the mosh pits. Other standout tracks are the title cut, the behemoth sounds of "The Scope Of Obsession", and the complex death metal rager " The Liar's Funeral". Throughout all the brutality, there's a surprising amount of melodic harmony guitar lines from Cory Arford & Ryan Gudmunds, giving these pulverizing tunes a classy sheen.

Hell Chose Me isn't the most original extreme metal album you'll hear this year, but it's one of those releases that gets better and better with each listen, and signals a band that is quickly growing and becoming a force on the death metal scene. If you are in the mood to get your deathcore freak on, this is 35 minutes worth of mayhem that will certainly help you get the job done.
