Here we have a band called Heidevolk, a Dutch act that play pagan folk metal. Heidevolk employ clean male vocals with the occasional growl, combined with music performed on the usual metal related instruments, plus those more traditional like the violin are also incorporated into Heidevolk's heavy folk compositions.
The debut of Heidevolk's metal was in 2003 with the title De Strijdlust Is Geboren, following next with an EP Wodan Heerst in 2005. In 2008 came the album Walhalla Wacht, and also in the same year the first two Heidevolk efforts were re-released by Napalm Records. In the present year of 2010 Heidevolk's soon to be released CD is Uit Oude Grond.
Much like say Rammstein's, Heidevolk's (non English) clean vocals also project a powerful aura, they incorporate duly with the super catchy and ably performed music on Uit Oude Grond.
"Nehalennis" opens this CD but the catchiness of "Ostara" does leave more of a lasting impression, and "Vlammenzee" is another that draws you in quite easily. Heidevolk like to vary the tempo with servings of double kicks and memorable riffs, such as the thunderous "Een Geldersch lied".
The vocals are shelved for the bulk of "Karel van Egmond, hertog van Gelre", and a bright sounding instrumental it is ,with a stimulating blend of instruments and changes in vigor between metal and folk- like rock, that concludes with a jubilant sounding sing along.
Those that purchase Uit Oude Grond will experience an excellent example of well composed and appealing pagan folk metal.
