Autumn Hour: Dethroned

The debut album from Autumn Hour is an unashamed power/prog-metal concept album that sees the tracks split across three sub-sections with the themes tackling the weighty subject matter of nano-technology and artificial intelligence. The band are the brainchild of one Alan Tecchio, a vocalist out of New Jersey who has been around for some length of time with seven albums with 80's thrashers Hades and having also fronted Texas prog Metallers Watchtower and the doom / power band Non-Fiction. Like all good concept albums this is an album that will take some time to fully appreciate but when it does begin to make an impact will have soon have you diving back in for repeated listens. The songs are mostly mid-tempo chuggers carried along by stuttering riffs, but with some melodic twists and turns that is exemplified by an unlikely cover of the Eurthymics' "Here Comes The Rain Again". Instead of sounding jarringly out of place the version of the Lennox-Stewart chestnut somehow fits in with the overall narrative and maintains the mood that is dark, haunting and melancholic. The post-apocalyptic tale finds its most sombre moment with the decidedly downbeat "How Were We Supposed To Know" where Tecchio's vocals invites comparison with Geoff Tate.

Having been available in North American territories for some time, Dethroned has just been released across Europe with the added bonus of three additional tracks. This is an album that touches on multiple facets of Metal but will have more appeal for those who like to delve into analysis of the lyrical side of things.
