With a name like 7dayBinge, this unlikely collaboration between members of 3 Doors Down (bassist Todd Harrell), Kid Rock's band (lead guitarist Kenny Olson) and Muzik Mafia (vocalist and guitarist Jon Nicholson) sounds exactly like you'd expect: Raw and unfiltered, as if the trio — plus drummer Shannon Boone — had been on, well, a seven-day binge before heading into the studio. And, according to the band's press material, that may indeed have been what happened!
The quartet delivers down 'n' dirty rock that falls somewhere between Stone Temple Pilots, Cavo, Daughtry and maybe a little bit of Van Halen. Nicholson even channels Sammy Hagar on "Oak Tree," and Olson injects the nine songs here with the kind of style and flair that helped propel Kid Rock to five Grammy nominations. Unfortunately, the rap-singing on "End of the Road" — which also, for just a moment or two, echoes the Boyz II Men song of the same name(!) — detracts from the shadowy, down-tuned Southern-fried scorcher. But 7dayBinge makes up for that with "Good Times." The album's finale, added at the last minute, is nearly 11 minutes of buzzing unadulterated rock 'n' roll — with a smokin' Nicholson solo to boot — one in which too few bands indulge these days.
