Sonic Firestorm saw London based band Dragonforce still obsessed with that frenetic speed metal that were becoming renowned for. Their fan base continued to grow, while others struggled to find the appeal with their music. So Dragonforce were, and still are for that matter, the subject of many website forum arguments.
"My Spirit Will Go On" has an engaging build up to the explosive music of Dragonforce, the variety of pace in this song is a certainly a positive. On "Fields of Despair" the extended solo section has the usual blazing guitars and the keyboards are very welcome. If by track eight your thirst for speed hasn't been quenched, well there is always the bonus track "Cry of the Brave".
The metal speed machine that is Dragonforce is still going strong, and yes I do still find their music frustrating at times, as I hear a passage and think "now that is cool, just maybe they are going to develop on this", but then the pace is promptly dialed up yet again. Sonic Firestorm was a solid CD, but Ultra Beatdown is still the best Dragonforce CD I have experienced. If you haven't checked this one out upon its original release, this reissue should do the trick for you.
