War Ceremony: Altars of War

The back of this CD proudly emblazons the words "New wave of old school death metal", which I was unaware existed and I have to say that there appears to be so many "new waves" lapping at the shore right now that I am in danger of becoming sea sick!

After a good number of spins, I can now attest that the "new wave of.....", (you get the picture), relates to traditional death metal with a few other little nuances thrown in for good measure. "My Dominion" kicks things off with pretty straight ahead traditional death metal. There are not many surprises, however at the same time the actual standard of musicianship and song creation is pretty high. As you would expect double kick blasts pour out of the speakers and Ville Mantyla screams, gargles and growls for all he's worth. There is however the odd little time change and between the sections the riff morphs often enough to keep things interesting. The pace is lowered for track two, "Mortal Sin" which never really gets above a slow stumble. The more doom laden atmosphere and surprising clean vocal gives hope that Warceremony are capable of mixing things up and when it comes to their full length debut that they will offer a mixture that contains a few twists and turns rather than constant full throttle bludgeon.

Closing with "Terminal Illness" Warceremony are back in full gallop, however once again there are little interesting changes of pace which make the more manic romps more effective. The guitar pairing of Sauli Kukkonen and Janne Tuikkala lock together tightly without ever over powering the overall effect and the stuttering solo that dives around like a madman on day release once more offers a welcome change of perspective. For an initial offering Warceremony have pieced together three intriguing tracks that may not pretend to be Earth shatteringly innovative, but they do offer enough character and intelligence to make their full length debut an interesting proposition.
